Groves House Party Summary

GSC hosted their first annual “House Party” school dance. Modeled after the “Fighting Falcon” dance, “House Party” was held Friday, January 19th after a boys basketball game at home against Oak Park. The dance started at 9:00 p.m. and lasted until 11:00 p.m. Students were encouraged to wear casual clothing and were also given the chance to create the playlist for the dance through a google form prior to the event. Wristbands were $5 and all of the proceeds went to the chosen charity for Groves 2018 Charity Week, NAMI. The dance raised over $1200 for the charity. Even though we had lost the basketball game sophomore, Nolan Kamoo, exclaimed, "I can't wait for this dance to happen next year!"

Powerbuff 2018

The game that concludes the rivalry between the juniors and the seniors; powerbuff. The juniors won the bucket and they won powderpuff. The seniors didn’t want to go out winless, so, powerbuff was there last chance. I’m Jamal and I decided to play powerbuff this year and it was a pretty average experience. There were 4 scheduled practices leading up to the event on February 12. But, because of the gym being filled on January 30, and the snow day on February 9 this caused us to only have 2 practices, while the juniors had 4. Starting off with a disadvantage wasn’t good but it turned out we didn’t need the 4 practices. I didn’t play powerbuff last year, so, the coaches decided not to start me.

Body Positivity

In elementary school we are taught that everyone is equal. Every skin color, every shape, every size, every ethnicity, and every age. Elementary school was simple. The only thing you had to worry about was memorizing the alphabet and worrying about what spot you would sit in on the rug. In middle school we begin to realize what popularity means. It means you have to wear the most expensive clothes. Lulu lemon leggings are a must have in order to make the A list. Clothes and body image begin to play a role in young girls minds. Girls begin starving themselves in order to be a size 0, or a size 2. Size 5 jeans are looked at in disgust. In high school we are taught that a man doesn't want an ov
