This week, COVID-19 has spread widely across the United States. With the first cases in metro Detroit having been reported on Tuesday, the effects of the coronavirus are being felt more and more by the Groves community with each passing day. Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency on Tuesday night after two cases were reported in the state, one in Oakland county and one in Wayne county.

In response to the outbreak, Birmingham Public Schools announced last night that schools will be closed on Monday so staff can prepare in case of a prolonged closure. The district will continue to update the community on the situation as it develops. The novel coronavirus, however, has many more effects than just school cancellations. Online classes, spring sports and extracurriculars, spring break, senior college decisions, and graduation dates are just some of the things that may result from or be affected by COVID-19.

This is a developing story.

More updates to come.
